Use what you have.
Tuesday, February 12th, 2008That’s my personal theme for the year, but I have realized that in many ways it has been a theme throughout our marriage too. Most of the major pieces in our home are things that were handed down to us, or were things I had before I got married. I can think of two major purchases for inside our house that my husband and I picked out together, our couches that are in the living room, and our huge television. Everything else was already owned, or handed down.
Now, we have been very lucky and inherited some nice pieces from my family, and our home would have a few empty rooms with out them giving us their cast aways and letting me take my childhood furniture. However, it does pose a design problem. After all, not everything goes together, and some things don’t exactly work in our house either. For example, my bedroom furniture was awesome when it was just little old me, but it doesn’t work so well for two adults.
Obviously it would be great to be able to run out and buy things that we love and that would really be “us” and work for our home. And that is the plan as our budget allows it, but there is something very creative about having to find ways to use what you have to create what you want.
What about you? Do you have a lot of furniture that was handed down, or that you already had from before you merged two lives together in one space?
